*Teacher Contact
The best way to get a hold of me is to send a note to me through seesaw. You can also send a note in your child's daily homework folder.
*Birthday Celebrations
We will be celebrating each child's birthday at school on the day of their birthday. If your child's birthday is on a weekend, it can be celebrated the Friday before or Monday after. Summer birthdays will be celebrated in May (a note will be sent home with a specific date). Please do not send any food, drinks, goody bags or treat bags.
*Homework
Homework for first grade includes daily practice of weekly High Frequency words, vocabulary words, power words, and spelling words at home, reading/being read to each night and math home work. Occasionally literacy practice sheets are sent home. All homework sent in your child's homework folder is due the following day. On occasion things come up that prevent your child from returning their work the following day, if this happens, please just send a note saying your child needs an extra day to complete the assignment. If your child is absent, please return missing work in a timely fashion.
*Weekly Reading
Your child should be reading each night or a total of 2-3 hours each week. This can include reading to your child, reading with your child and listening to your child read to you. As your child's reading skills get stronger, more of their reading can and should be done independently and silently. Record this reading time on your child's reading log sent home.
*Weekly Vocabulary/High Frequency Words/Power words
Weekly vHigh Frequency word cards come home on Monday in your child's folder and are on on the assignment sheet. These words should be practiced each week until your child can read the words on their own.
*Spelling Words
Spelling words should be practiced every night orally and in written form. Words come home each Monday on the assignment sheet. We take a Monday pretest (a test on words that have not been practiced) and a Post test on Friday. If your child receives +11 or +12 on the Monday's pretest, they will be given a second list of words to study for the week. They will be tested on this second list of words on Friday for their post test.
